Expression profiling of Chondrus crispus (Rhodophyta) after exposure to methyl jasmonate

Abstract: Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is a plant hormone important for the mediation of signals for developmental processes and defence reactions in higher plants. The effects of MeJA and the signalling pathways on other photosynthetic organism groups are largely unknown, even though MeJA may have very important roles. Therefore the effects of MeJA in a red alga were studied. A medium-scale expression profiling approach to identify genes regulated by MeJA in the red seaweed Chondrus crispus is described here. The expression… Show more

“…MJA and BR (applied separately) altered the expression of several genes: some MJA-induced changes in the proteome were identical with BR-induced changes, other MJA-induced changes differed from BR-induced alterations (Ghasempour et al 1998). Brassinosteroids and MJA are found across the plant taxa from algae to angiosperms (Yokota et al 1987;Collén et al 2006).…”

“…The cell wall contains carrageenan, typically with ι-and κ-carrageenan in the gametophyte and λ-carrageenan in the sporophyte. In contrast to most other red algae, important scientific background knowledge exists for Chondrus, including studies on the mitochondrial genome (9), transcriptomics (10,11), interactions with pathogens (12), effects of UV radiation (13), stress metabolism (14), and population ecology (15,16). Thus, the availability of the C. crispus genome should help promote this organism as a model species for florideophyte algae and shed light on key aspects of eukaryotic evolution.…”

“…PAL, a key enzyme in the first step of the phenylpropanoid pathway, is directly involved in the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds (Dixon and Pavia 1995). The transcription of defense-related genes in C. crispus, including glutathione S-transferase, heat shock protein 20, xenobiotic reductase, and phycocyanin lyase, is also upregulated by MeJA treatment (Collen et al 2006). In the brown seaweed Laminaria digitata, MeJA triggered an oxidative burst (Küpper et al 2009), with rapid release of reactive oxygen species (superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide).…”
