Expression patterns of diverse genes in response to gamma irradiation inNicotiana tabacum

Abstract: We investigated the expression patterns of diverse genes at various time points after gamma irradiation of young tobacco plants. The first group of genes showed stimulation of transcript levels upon gamma irradiation, although their induction patterns varied. This group included glutathione-S-transferase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. A second group, with post-irradiation reduction of transcripts, included genes encoding cytosolic ascorbate peroxidase, stromal ascorbate peroxidase, and a TMK1… Show more

“…The supernatant (1 ml) obtained was mixed with an equal INFLUENCE OF IONIZING IRRADIATION ON THE ANTIOXIDANT ENZYMES OF VICIA FABA L hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen (Cakmak and Horst, 1991). Moreover Cho et al (2000) found that the expression patterns of GST, SOD, POD and CAT genes exhibited increased transcripts with γ-irradiation of Nicotiana tabacum. Slooten et al (1995) reported that the stimulation in SOD activity in response to stresses is possibly attributed to the de-novo synthesis of the enzymatic protein.…”

“…Aly and El-Beltagi [38] showed that increase in GST, CAT, SOD, and POD activities in Vicia faba L. seeds could be attributed to ionizing irradiation stress. Cho et al [39] investigated the expression patterns of diverse genes at various time points after gamma irradiation of young tobacco plants and found three different gene expression pattern (increased, decreased, and no response) of antioxidative enzymes (CAT, SOD, and GST). However, Al-Rumaih and Al-Rumaih [40] reported that gamma irradiation affected antioxidant enzyme activities in the three investigated species of wheat.…”

“…The stress reaction of plants often results in an alteration of gene products (Humera, 2006), which plays a key role in the molecular mechanisms of stress tolerance (Rao, 2006). Cho et al (2000) demonstrated that various genes displayed differential patterns of gene expression in response to irradiation in tobacco plants, thereby suggesting that a complex signaling mechanism is involved in the irradiation-induced defense by plants. As a result of altered gene expression under radiation stress, the qualitative and quantitative changes in protein content were obvious (Corthals et al, 2000).…”

“…Meanwhile, Cho et al (2000) discovered that a group of genes, which includes glutathione-S-transferase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, showed stimulation of transcript levels upon γ irradiation of young tobacco plants. This suggests that there was an increase in expression of peroxidase and its activity in young tobacco plants which were subjected to radiation stress.…”
