“…The genetic changes taking place during the procedure of carcinogenesis of the female lower genital tract and their clinical impact have not been fully elucidated. Many studies have focused on the expression of several different proteins in normal, precancerous, and cancerous lesions of the cervix with refuting results (18–20) . Similar studies have not been undertaken for the vagina and thus, an interesting finding in the present study was the negativity for p53 overexpression after treatment, in three patients who had p53‐positive nuclei prior to the beginning of therapy.…”

On the other hand there are also reports, albeit limited in number, suggesting that the levels of p53 overexpression may be higher in low grade lesions as compared to higher grade dysplasia or that there is no correlation whatsoever between p53 expression and intraepithelial disease grade .
