Expression of Viral Arthritis-Tenosynovitis Infection in Immunosuppressed Chickens

Abstract: Previously untreated chicks and those treated neonatally with either cyclophosphamide (CY) or infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) were subcutaneously inoculated with viral arthritis virus ( VAV ) to determine whether suppression of humoral immunity would affect VAV pathogenicity. No difference was apparent in the disease process that occurred in the immunosuppressed versus the nonimmunosuppressed chickens. However, in the immunosuppressed birds, VAV was recovered from the heart and tendon tissues earlier in… Show more

“…Our results, however, differ from those reported by Naqi et al (1984) who produced only a subclinical infection by subcutaneous inoculation of reovirus in Cy and IBDV immunosuppressed chickens. Possibly, one of the main reasons for the conflicting results may be the lower Cy dose of only 3.0 mg in total used by Naqi et al (1984) for it is known that at low doses Cy immunosuppression is variable (Hiraga et al, 1976;Glick, 1977).…”

Another explanation might relate to the virulence of the reovirus involved, but dose of virus is not implicated because in the present study one of the doses was the same as that used by Naqi et al (1984).…”

“…In the first study (Naqi et al, 1984), both infection and CY treatments were given simultaneously. In the second study (Kibenge et al, 1987) the effects of experimental immunosuppression, using CY treatment with or without surgical thymectomy or bursectomy, on the resistance to pathology of graded doses of arthrotropic reovirus infection at 1 day of age was investigated.…”
