Expression of MMP-1 in histopathological different grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma and in normal buccal mucosa – an immunohistochemical study

Abstract: Evidence indicates that the elevated MMP-1 protein expression is associated with higher histopathological grade of OSCC. NBM express MMP-1 diffusely and weakly. MMP-1 immune reactivity increases as OC progresses from NBM to well to poorly differentiated OSCC.

“…Matrix metalloproteinase-8 affects the level of MMP-3 in breast carcinoma ( Decock et al , 2015 ). In OTSCC cells, MMP-8 overexpression decreased the expression of MMP-1, a tumour-promoting proteinase in OSCC ( Sutinen et al , 1998 ; Kurahara et al , 1999 ; Jordan et al , 2004 ; Shimizu et al , 2008 ; George et al , 2010 ). Interestingly, MMP-9 expression was increased in MMP-8+ OTSCC cells.…”

“…In normal conditions, MMP1 is under the suppression of TIMP1 (43,44) and elevated MMP1 has been reported to play an important role in invasive and migration capacity of tumor cells (45). Mounting evidence indicates that elevated MMP1 expression was observed in the borders of solid tumors, such as breast and oral cancer (46)(47)(48). Mechanically, MMP1 is thought to promote invasion and metastasis through the degradation of the ECM as the main component of connective tissue, like to relieve the reins for the horses (49)(50)(51).…”

“…In addition, MMP1 has been reported to play a critical role in the invasion and migration processes of solid tumors (30,31). Furthermore, mounting evidence indicates that up-regulation of MMP1 is observed in the borders of solid tumors, such as in breast and oral cancer (32)(33)(34). In 2010, Scrideli and colleagues collected bone marrow samples from 134 children with ALL and evaluated the mRNA expression profile of TIMP1, TIMP2, MMP2 and MMP9.…”
