“…Elevated Gal-3 levels have been associated with a wide range of neoplasms and events that may promote tumor progression and metastasis [15,16,17]. The potential diagnostic usage of Gal-3 has been supported by studies in thyroid, pulmonary, gastric, colon cancer and anoplastic large-cell lymphoma, although inconsistent results have been suggested from different studies [18,19]. According to recent studies, Gal-3 play an important role in malignant potentials of the CNS tumors, pituitary cell proliferation and tumor progression; and ACTH pituitary carcinoma expresses a higher level of Gal-3 in comparison to pituitary adenoma [17,20].…”

“…Recently, genes such as LGALS3, 33 HnRPA1, 34 and EPHA1 35 have received attention as emerging potential targets for oncogenesis and cancer therapy. FLJ21588 (ASCC2), TRIM4, MAPRE3, MIG12, 36 and OIP5 have been newly identified as promising oncogenes in this study, even though further studies of these genes will be needed to ensure their involvements in tumorigenesis.…”

“…In a study of 35 adenoid cystic carcinomas, the expression of galectin -3 , a betagalactoside-binding lectin implicated in tumour progression and metastasis, was investigated. A signifi cant correlation with regional and distant metastasis was found but no statistical significance in the correlation of galectin-3 expression and disease-free survival and overall survival rate [ 184 ]. Detection of apoptosis by the TUNEL method showed that patients with tumours having a high apoptotic index had a better cumulative survival than patients with a low apoptotic index [ 89 ].…”
