Expression of cytokeratins 5/6 and cytokeratin 17 in invasive breast carcinoma

Abstract: Our findings are similar to reports that tumours expression of basal cytokeratins are correlated with adverse pathological parameters. Given the limited number of emerging therapeutic targets in these tumors, routine IHC identification of basal-like subtype as a poor prognostic group of breast cancer could be based on the expression of basal CKs.

“…CK5/6, confirmed as the distinct cytokeratin that breast basal cells express, is related to the invasion, metastasis, and prognosis of breast cancer ( 14 ). In our study of 42 patients, the expression status of CK5/6 was significantly associated exclusively with v p .…”

“…The positive expression of CK5 was the protective factor of SLN metastasis. Previous studies have shown that TNBC patients with CK5/6 negative expression were more likely to develop early micro-metastasis (22). The studies by Adamo et al and Maeda et al suggested that the recurrencefree survival and overall survival of TNBC patients with loss of CK5/6 expression were worse than CK5/6-positive (23,24).…”

“…It has been reported that secretory carcinoma is negative for ER, PR and HER2, so called "triple negative" 2,17 . Recent studies suggest that SBC espress basal-cell markers, including cytokeratins 5/6, 14 and 17, c-Kit (CD117), epidermal growth factor receptor and vimentin [17][18][19] . Also, there is consistently immunopositivity for S100 and α-lactalbumin 5 and for E-cadherin as expected in any subtype of ductal carcinoma.…”
