Expression of Bcl-2 in Breast Cancer: Correlation with Clinicopathological Characteristics and Survival

Abstract: Summary: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. It is an immensely heterogeneous disease, characterised by a broad variety of clinical development. The research in recent years has focused on finding new markers of prognosis. This study investigates the role of expression of the bcl-2 protein in breast cancer. We analysed bcl-2 expression in 57 women with primary breast carcinoma who were treated with neoadjuvant (primary) chemotherapy, followed by a surgical procedure. The bcl-2 expression was … Show more

“…Further, Filip Čečka et al . 28 showed no significant relationship between BCL-2 expression with tumor grade and primary tumors, which concurs with our findings herein. The observed correlations among clinical-histopathological features (cancer stage vs cancer grade; cancer grade vs nodule status; T stage vs cancer stage/cancer grade) reported in the current study could be explained by the fact that the larger the primary tumor the greater the number of lymph nodes that will be affected in advanced cancer stage and cancer grade 29 .…”

“…Studies have shown that changes in the ratio of Bcl-2 to Bax can regulate apoptosis. Bcl-2 overexpression has anti-apoptotic effects; in contrast, Bax overexpression stimulates apoptosis (24). In the present study, we found that Bcl-2 levels were significantly decreased and Bax levels were significantly increased in p-CA-treated A375 and B16 cells.…”

“…Cecka, et al [2] did study on expression of BCl2 in 57 females suffering from primary Breast cancer who were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The immunohistochemistry (IHC) for BCl2 were performed either on the surgical specimens or core cut biopsies with Streptavidin and Biotin method with peroxidise detection system.…”

“…The modern day practice of oncopathology revolves more around predictive prognostic markers that would enable the appropriate adjuvant therapies and management of cancer. One of the challenges in breast cancer management is to accurately predict the outcome for each patient, so that the patients will be benefitted from adjuvant therapies or by appropriate surgical interventions [1,2].…”
