This study associated Ki-67, p53, and BCL-2 markers with clinical histopathological (CH) features using currently available limited data on these markers in Tanzania. Retrospective chart review study was conducted among females with confirmed breast cancer (BC) at Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania between 2016 and 2017. Inclusion criteria were met by 76 patients with a mean age of 51.32 ± 14.28 years. Of these, 86.4% were stage III and IV, whereas 83.5% cases had grade 2 and grade 3. Upon immunostaining, 85.5% and 57.9% were Ki-67 and BCL-2 positive respectively. Log-linear analysis showed no statistically significant association among biomarkers expression and CH features. However, multinomial linear regression showed higher possibility for association between high expression of Ki-67, low expression of p53 and high expression of BCL-2 with age, grade, stage and tumor (T) stage. BCL-2 was positively correlated with Ki-67 expression contrary to p53, which was negatively correlated with BCL-2. Conclusively, there is evidence of correlation between the studied markers with CH features. However, studies with larger sample sizes will likely reveal significant associations that will validate the role of these markers as tools for evaluating treatment response in individualized therapeutic schemes in Tanzania.
Aims
Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive B‐cell lymphoma that, in some instances, may show a granulomatous reaction associated with a favourable prognosis and occasional spontaneous regression. In the present study, we aimed to define the tumour microenvironment (TME) in four such cases, two of which regressed spontaneously.
Methods and results
All cases showed aggregates of tumour cells with the typical morphology, molecular cytogenetics and immunophenotype of BL surrounded by a florid epithelioid granulomatous reaction. All four cases were Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)‐positive with type I latency. Investigation of the TME showed similar features in all four cases. The analysis revealed a proinflammatory response triggered by Th1 lymphocytes and M1 polarised macrophages encircling the neoplastic cells with a peculiar topographic distribution.
Conclusions
Our data provide an
in‐vivo
picture of the role that specific immune cell subsets might play during the early phase of BL, which may be capable of maintaining the tumour in a self‐limited state or inducing its regression. These novel results may provide insights into new potential therapeutic avenues in EBV‐positive BL patients in the era of cellular immunotherapy.
Background
Meningiomas that are progesterone receptor positive have a low recurrence rate and good prognosis compared to those that are progesterone receptor negative. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of expression of progesterone in meningiomas and its association with clinicopathological characteristics.
Materials and methods
This was a cross-sectional laboratory-based study that was conducted at Muhimbili National Hospital. The study included 112 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of patients who were confirmed to have meningiomas on histological basis from January 2010 to December 2014. Immunohistochemical expression of progesterone receptor was tested using a primary monoclonal progesterone receptor antibody ready to use (IR 068 Dako). The χ

test was used to determine the association between clinicopathological characteristics and progesterone receptor expression. A 2-tailed

Results
The mean age of the patients was 45.5 ± 3.601 years, and majority (66.1%, n = 74) were in the age group between 31 and 60 years. Also, majority of the patients (60%, n = 67) in this study were females. Over one-third of the cases (34.8%, n = 39) comprised of meningotheliomatous subtype, and majority of the cases (89.3%, n = 100) were of grade I. The prevalence of progesterone expression was 54.5% (n = 61), and only age was associated with progesterone receptor expression (
P
= 0.043).
Conclusion
The finding of high expression of the progesterone receptor for grade I cases in this study indicates that progesterone receptor expression in meningiomas is of prognostic value and may be considered when evaluating patients for management. Lack of expression of progesterone receptor in all the malignant cases is intriguing and needs further studies that can investigate its prognostic role.
