Show more

“…The summer harvest provided a higher NCF and NDF (Table 3), as observed by Silva et al (2007). Martelleto et al (2011) evaluated the floral behavior of papaya in four cropping systems, and reported that the environmental and phenological conditions favorable to the production of normal fruits and carpeloids were the same, which confirms that there is a positive correlation between these variables.…”

“…Papaya blooms and produces fruits continuously for up to two years after reaching reproductive maturity (Martelleto et al, 2013). Despite this, floral behavior, which is highly sensitive to environmental factors, may negatively affect fruit production, leading to sexual reversion, carpelloidy, and pentandry (Damasceno Júnior et al, 2008).…”

“…This phenomenon, known as summer sterility (Storey 1958), is one of the main causes of decreased production in some periods of the year, since it concentrates production in certain seasons. Martelleto et al (2011) carried out an experiment to compare fruiting in a variety of papaya in different seasons of the year, under greenhouse and field conditions, and estimated the number of carpelloid, pentandric, and normal (commercial) fruits. The data obtained by these authors corroborate the reports of Silva et al (2007a) and Damasceno Júnior et al (2008) on increased sterility and increased number of deformed fruits in different seasons of the year.…”

“…Also in agreement with Damasceno Junior et al (2008) and Silva et al (2007), low temperatures may contribute to increased carpelloidy. Martelleto et al (2011) carried out a study with cultivar Baixinho de Santa Amália, with manually bifurcated trunks. The authors observed little occurrence of carpelloid fruits and a large number of summer sterile flowers.…”
