This research is aimed at investigating the dynamic behaviour of, and to analyse the dynamic response and dynamic performance of steel frames strengthened with welded haunches subjected to a typical hydrocarbon blast loading. The structural dynamic analysis was carried out incorporating the selected blast load, the validated 3D model of the structures with different welded haunch configurations, steel dynamic material properties, and non-linear dynamic analysis of multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) structural systems. The dynamic responses and effectiveness of the reinforced connections were examined using ABAQUS finite element software. Results showed that the presence of the welded haunch reinforcement decreased the maximum frame ductility ratio. Based on the evaluation of the results, the haunch reinforcements strengthened the selected steel frame and improved the dynamic performance compared to the frame with unreinforced connections under blast loading, and the biggest haunch configuration is the “best” type.

The potential risk of explosion always exists in offshore topside facilities that deal with flammable materials. Thus, explosion risk analysis taking into account possible scenarios should be performed during the design process to reduce probability of such terrible accidents. There are several technical documents for explosion risk analysis. The analysis usually includes performance criteria, risk acceptance range, and corresponding explosion design load taking into account explosion pressure. However, this standard procedure is not sufficient to assess the potential risk of explosion, since it is usually based solely on the severity of overpressure. Therefore, more in-depth analysis is required to understand the potential risk taking explosion wave profiles into account. In the present paper, a stepwise analysis of gas explosion risk elements has been performed. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of explosion risk have been performed based on the framework of typical explosion risk analysis methods. In addition, both the probability distribution of explosion load parameters taking into account overpressure and its impulse and their correlation have been investigated extensively.

Explosions and fire have very critical safety hazard impacts on offshore oil and gas facilities since they are mostly located in remote areas and could induce serious environmental issues. Explosion risk assessment and structure blast analysis are essential for these production facilities, and research studies have been carried out. Explosion due to blowout during drilling operation is also a critical risk for drilling units, and this has not been researched much until the accident of the drilling unit in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. This paper provides the risk and evaluation of explosion and structure under blast pressure during the drilling operation, whereas previous research studies have mainly been interested in process plants. This study suggests weight saving in drilling units through the consideration of the actual behavior of gas explosion. Weight saving is the priority of offshore unit design due to payload. This research also gives guidelines to select the material-grade-appropriate anti-explosion system through the comparison of several materials by design and result.
