Exploring the spectral variability of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Markarian 530 with Suzaku

Abstract: A 2012 Suzaku observation of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Markarian 530 was analysed and found to exhibit two distinct modes of variability, which were found to be independent from one another. Firstly, the spectrum undergoes a smooth transition from a soft to a hard spectrum. Secondly, the spectrum displays more rapid variability seemingly confined to a very narrow energy band (∼ 1 − 3 keV). Three physical models (blurred reflection, partial covering, and soft Comptonisation) were explored to characterise the avera… Show more

“…The bright highsoft state occurs in the first 335 ks of the observation (pre-dip in the light curve) and the dim low-hard state occurs in the final 58 ks. Such a switch in behaviour with regards to spectral variability has been seen before in AGN, for instance in I Zw1 (Gallo et al 2007a,b), Mrk 530 (Ehler et al 2018). Moreover, the analysis suggests that the component driving the rapid variations (brightness and spectral) is the power law slope and flux.…”

“…Zw 229.015 exhibits a blend of curious features similar to features exhibited by sources like Akn 120 (e.g. Vaughan et al 2004;Matt et al 2014;Porquet et al 2018) and Mrk 530 (Ehler et al 2018). Zw 229.015 shows a soft excess that is gently increasing above the power law starting at about 2 keV toward lower energies.…”

“…Furthermore, ionised iron emission features have been reported in both NLS1 and BLS1 AGN (e.g. Patrick et al 2012;Mantovani et al 2016;Ehler et al 2018;Waddell et al 2019). Overall, this suggests that the presence of ionised iron emission is similar for NLS1 and BLS1 galaxies.…”

“…This feature is seen in some AGN including Ark 120 (e.g. Vaughan et al 2004;Porquet et al 2018), Mrk 530 (Ehler et al 2018), and Zw 229.015 (Tripathi et al 2019). A separate source of emission is then required to explain the presence of Fe Kα lines and other emission features.…”
