Exploring of Antimicrobial Activity of Triphala Mashi—An Ayurvedic Formulation

Abstract: Triphala Mashi is an ayurvedic formulation that was prepared in our lab. Aqueous and alcoholic extracts of both Triphala and Triphala Mashi were used, to evaluate antimicrobial activity. Comparative phytochemical profile of Triphala and Triphala Mashi was done by preliminary phytochemical screening, total phenolic content and thin layer chromatography (TLC). Antimicrobial activity includes isolation of pathogens from clinical samples, its characterization, testing its multiple drug resistance against standard … Show more

“…It has been reported that various applications of triphala in medical field used as laxative, digestive stimulation, anti inflammatory, antioxidant activity, lower cholesterol, reduces tumor size and improves liver function (Kumar et al, 2010;Sandhya et al, 2006). It also inhibits the growth of Gram-positive and Gramnegative bacteria (Biradar et al, 2008).…”

“…In fact, many other effects converge into beneficial outcome such as reduction in damage following inflammation. For example, antimicrobial activity of Triphala acts against inflammation in bowel associated with microorganisms [13], which may provides a crucial factor in healing of bowel lesions. In IBD, elevated levels of histamine often leads to over stimulation of the defence systems, sympathetic adreno-modulatory systems and increases the levels of metabolites, proteins, sugars and capillary permeability leading to digestive dysfunction [45,46].…”

“…in equal proportions. Traditionally, Triphala is acclaimed for its Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties and well recognized for beneficial effects like anti-inflammatory [9], immunomodulatory [10], antioxidant [11], hypoglycaemic [12] and anti-microbial [13] potential. Recently, Triphala is gaining importance as a treatment for cancer [14], arthritis [9,19] and common bowel problems [15,16].…”

“…It tonifies the gastrointestinal tract, improves digestion, and is known to exhibit antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiallergic properties (Sharma, 2015;Amala and Jeyaraj, 2014;Sumathi and Parvathi, 2010). Triphala Mashi (mashi: black ash) was found to have nonspecific antimicrobial activity, as it showed a dose-dependent inhibition of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Biradar et al, 2008).…”
