Introduction: Internet addiction among the youth has become a public health concern. It leads to impairments in several aspects of life. Previous studies identified individual and environmental risk factors for internet addiction. The effect of online activities on youth internet use behavior is not well investigated. This study assessed the prevalence of internet addiction and determined the roles of online activities for internet addiction among students in Bahir Dar University. Methods: Data were collected from 812 randomly selected undergraduate regular program students recruited from 10 departments. Participants completed a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Results: The results indicated that 35.2% of students were classified as being addicted to the internet. The four most important online activities students engaged on the internet are social networking (75.5%), entertainments (73.6%), academic works (72.5%), and online game (60.8%). Including online activity variables improved the explanation of internet addicted behavior over the individual and environmental attributes. Online activities explained 48.4% of the variance in internet addiction. Students who did not use the internet for social networking (AOR = .11; 95% CI: .06 - .21) and online game (AOR = .31; 95% CI: .21 - .46) were less likely to be internet addicted. Conclusions: Our findings revealed that more than one third of the participants were addicted internet users. Online activities better predict students’ addicted internet use behavior than individual and environmental attributes. Thus, university authorities and other concerned bodies need to be aware of the prevalence of IA and introduce regulatory mechanisms to limit the usage of potentially addictive online internet applications and promote responsible internet use behavior.

Only few studies have examined the relationship between problematic Internet use (PIU) and cognitive and academic performance in adolescents. The aim of this study was to analyze the differences in academic and cognitive performance (perception, attention, memory, verbal fluency and abstract reasoning) between adolescents with and without PIU. A total of 575 students from different high schools of the region of Alicante participated. Students were divided into two groups: adolescents with and without PIU (PIU and NPIU, respectively). Several questionnaires were administered to assess problematic Internet use, as well as students' academic performance. Substance use (alcohol / cannabis) was also assessed as exclusion criteria. A battery of neuropsychological tests was used to assess cognitive abilities. On the one hand, PIU users group obtained poorer academic results than NPIU, in terms of lower marks and more failed subjects. On the other hand, PIU group had a better hit ratio in the perception test than NPIU group. However, PIU adolescents got higher error rates for the abstract reasoning test. This greater number of errors, plus a similar number of hits compared to the NPIU group, could indicated a higher response rate for the PIU group, which may might be associated with greater impulsivity. As occurs in other addictive and non-substance-related problems studies, these results could mean difficulties in impulse control and regulation of response inhibition circuits in PIU users group. Future research is needed to analyze in depth the results presented in this paper.

Bu çalışmada sağlık hizmetleri meslek yüksekokulunda okuyan son sınıf öğrencilerinde umutsuzluk düzeyinin belirlenmesi ve umutsuzluk düzeyinin sosyodemografik ve bireysel özellikler, benlik saygısı ve okudukları programa yönelik düşünceleri ile ilişkisinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Materyal-Metot: Kesitsel tipteki bu araştırmanın evreni Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Sağlık Hizmetleri Meslek Yüksekokulu'nda öğrenim gören ikinci sınıf öğrencilerinden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmada örneklem seçimi yapılmaksızın evrenin tamamına ulaşılması hedeflenmiştir. Veriler literatürden yararlanılarak oluşturulan bir anket, Beck Umutsuzluk Ölçeği ve Rosenberg Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği'yle toplanmıştır. Veriler bağımsız gruplarda t testi ve varyans analizi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Araştırmaya katılan kız öğrencilerin umutsuzluk düzeyi daha yüksektir (p<0,01). Çocukluğunda köyde yaşayanlarda, yaşam kalitesini kötü olarak algılayanlarda, genel olarak sağlığından hoşnut olmayanlarda umutsuzluk düzeyi daha yüksektir (p<0,05). Ailesinin ekonomik durumunu iyi olarak algılayanların umutsuzluk düzeyi daha düşüktür (p<0,05). Ailenin ve diğer yakınlarının öğrencinin okuduğu programa yönelik olumsuz yönde tepkileri umutsuzluk düzeyini artırmaktadır (p<0,05). Kendini bu mesleğe uygun bulmayanlarda, bu okulda aradığını bulamayanlarda, idealindeki mesleğin bu meslek olmadığını düşünenlerde, mesleği yaparken şiddete uğrama ve ağır koşullarda çalışma kaygısı olanlarda umutsuzluk düzeyi daha yüksektir (p<0,05). Genel olarak okulun ortamı ve okuduğu programın eğitim kalitesinden memnun olmayanlarda, barınma ve beslenme sorunu olanlarda umutsuzluk düzeyi daha yüksektir (p<0,05). Benlik saygısının yüksek olması umutsuzluğu azaltmaktadır (p<0,001). Sonuç: Öğrencilerin sosyodemografik özellikleri, benlik saygısı, okula ve okudukları programa yönelik düşünceleri ve sorunları, çevreden olumsuz etkilenmeleri ve mesleğe yönelik kaygılarının olması geleceğe yönelik olumsuz beklentilere neden olmaktadır. Umutsuzluk yaratan eğitsel ve sosyal sorunların çözümlenmesi için çaba harcanması gerekmektedir.
