Exploring consumer participation in environment management: Findings from two‐staged structural equation modelling‐artificial neural network approach

Abstract: A manufacturer's extended producer responsibility for environment management cannot be fulfilled without the participation of end consumers. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the role of consumers in recycling programs of end of life mobile phones. Based on the theory of planned behavior, hypotheses were developed for which data was collected from 746 respondents and a two staged structural equation modelling‐artificial neural network was applied. Both techniques generated similar results which prov… Show more

“…Similarly, the responsibility of a product to the environment cannot be fulfilled without the participation of customers. Thus, the latest study in the field of sustainability intended to explore the role of consumers in recycling smartphones [ 65 ]. Accordingly, the issues of sustainability and social responsibility are essential.…”

“…Finally, empirical findings suggest that the same theoretical models applied to different EEE categories have substantially different results, e.g. [30,31]. Despite the important implications of these findings, there are no studies synthesising the characteristics of EEE categories that account for substantial differences in consumer behaviour.…”

“…This study contends that this gap also exists in consumer attitudes and behaviors toward social enterprise‐related activities. While previous studies indicate that consumers' personal value and ethical beliefs affect their ethical consumption behaviors (Hunt & Vitell, 2006; Najmi et al, 2020), the effect of situational factors (i.e., personal benefits) in reducing or increasing ethical consumption behaviors remains little explored (Pérez & del Bosque, 2015). If consumer values cannot lead to positive ethical consumption, are other situational factors able to strengthen behaviors to support social enterprises for maximum social benefits?…”
