The past decades witnessed the golden era of hadron physics. Many excited open heavy flavor mesons and baryons have been observed since 2017. We shall provide an updated review of the recent experimental and theoretical progresses in this active field. Besides the conventional heavy hadrons, we shall also review the recently observed open heavy flavor tetraquark states X(2900) and T + cc (3875) as well as the hidden heavy flavor multiquark states X(6900), P cs (4459) 0 , Z cs (3985) − , Z cs (4000) + , and Z cs (4220) + . We will also cover the recent progresses on the glueballs and light hybrid mesons, which are the direct manifestations of the non-Abelian SU (3) gauge interaction of the Quantum Chromodynamics in the low-energy region.

We perform an effective-field-theory-based coupled-channel analysis of the recent BES III data on the e + e − annihilation into the final state) in a wide energy range and extract the poles responsible for the formation of the Z cs (3982). We identify two scenarios which provide a similar description of the experimental mass distributions but result in utterly different predictions for the spin partners of the Z cs (3982): although both scenarios are consistent with the Z cs as a SU (3) partner of the Z c (3900), the Z c (4020) appears naturally as a spin partner of these states only in one of them (fit 1) while in the other (fit 2) its nature has to be different. Also, the Z cs (3982) has a J P = 1 + spin partner near the D * s D * threshold in fit 1, while no such state exists in fit 2. We predict the D * s D * invariant mass distribution in the J P = 1 + channel for the reaction e + e − → K + D * − s D * 0 and argue that this line shape can be used to distinguish between the two scenarios once data in this channel are available.

Chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking play an important role both in the light hadron and heavy hadron systems. In this work, we shall review the investigations on the chiral corrections to the properties of the heavy mesons and baryons within the framework of the chiral perturbation theory (χPT). We will also review the scatterings of the light pseudoscalar mesons and heavy hadrons. Moreover, the modern nuclear force was built upon the chiral effective field theory (χEFT). In the past decades many new hadron states were observed experimentally. A large group of these states are near-threshold resonances, such as the charged charmoniumlike Z c and Z cs states, bottomoniumlike Z b states, hidden-charm pentaquark P c and P cs states and the doubly charmed T cc state etc. They are very good candidates of the loosely bound molecular states composed of a pair of charmed hadrons. The same chiral dynamics not only governs the nuclei and forms the deuteron, but also dictates the above shallow bound states or resonances. We will perform an extensive review on the progress on the heavy hadronic molecular states within the framework of χEFT.
