Exploration of grid scheme for Frisch-grid ionization chamber

Abstract: A new Frisch-grid ionization chamber has been built to explore the appropriate choice of Frisch-grid. Detailed studies of the relationship between grid geometries and detector performance have been performed with an $$^{241}$$ 241 Am source. This paper describes and compares the energy resolution of ionization chambers with parallel-wire and mesh grids of different grid parameters. Some specific recommendations for g… Show more

“…The simulated electron transmittance is the proportion of the number of electrons collected by the anode to the original number of electrons. The experimental value of the electron transmittance as a comparison is the ratio of the tested anode pulse height to its saturation pulse height [18]. The simulation results of the 60-mesh and 40-mesh SSWWM grid shown in figure 9 are basically consistent with the experimental results that verifies the reliability of the simulation method.…”

“…To achieve a homogeneous electric field inside the field cage, 1.5 mm wide and 2 mm pitch parallel copper strips are etched on both sides of the FR4 substrate [36,37]. The copper strips on opposite sides are half-pitch staggered as shown in Fig.…”

“…The operation voltages of the detector were determined following the pioneering FG-IC work by Li et al [24], which provides a relation between optimum electron transmittance and electric field ratio (E c : E a ) for different wire gate; here E c and E a are the electric field strength between the cathodegrid and anode-grid regions, respectively. In this article, the accurate electric field ratio is 1:2.2 (E d : E c ) for a Frisch grid with gold-plated tungsten wires of 50-μm diameter and a 500-μm pitch.…”

“…Figure 6 presents the energy spectra obtained at 700 mbar of the P10 gas with an 241 Am source for the different sealed windows. The red lines represent the best-fitted Gaussian peak taking into account the known alpha peak energies and branching ratios The energy resolution was calculated using the full width at half maximum (FWHM) and peak position of the main alpha (5.48556 MeV) decay branch with a branching ratio of 84.8% [24]. Throughout all of the measurements, we used identical methods to determine the FWHM and the peak position.…”
