The Atacora Mountain range is an important mountain chain in the West African landscape. It extends from northern Benin to Togo and Ghana. More and more cattle are starting to graze on the Beninese part of this range, although there is a critical lack of basic data on its ecological function. The present study assesses the effects of topography and aspect on the grassland biomass production of these mountains. The results show that annual grassland biomass production averages 5.29 tonnes dry matter (DM)/ha. This biomass production is significantly impacted by aspect (east facing versus west facing). Biomass is lower on east-facing sides (4.97 tonnes DM/ha) than on west-facing sides (6.10 tonnes DM/ha) and hilltops and valleys (6.24 tonnes DM/ha). This effect may be explained by direct exposure of east-facing sides to the harmattan, a northeast dry wind blowing from the Sahara Desert. No significant impact of topography on biomass production is observed.

La satisfaction des besoins de l’homme et du bétail exerce une pression sur les ressources naturelles végétales des aires de conservation. Cette pression anthropique influence et modifie la composition floristique, la diversité spécifique et les paramètres structuraux dans les aires de conservation de la biodiversité et leurs périphéries. Les méthodes utilisées dans la présente recherche sont la méthode de relevé phytosociologique et dendrométrique et le relevé linéaire. La classification hiérarchique des relevés phytosociologiques sur la base de la présence-absence des espèces a permis d’individualiser cinq pâturages. La caractérisation de la structure de la végétation à travers ces pâturages a montré la prédominance des ligneux de petite circonférence. Les phanérophytes sont les types biologiques les plus représentés alors que sur le plan chorologique, les espèces de l’élément-base soudanien sont les plus représentées. L’indice de diversité de Shannon varie de 2,40 ± 0,66 à 3,17 ± 0,37 bits. La densité des ligneux varie de 315,71 ± 93,65 à 414,63 ±113,13 tiges/ha et la surface terrière de 12,85 ± 3,79 à 26,28 ± 15,11. Quant à la valeur pastorale, elle varie de 52,57 à 63,60. Ces différents indices indiquent la stabilité et la régénération des ligneux dans les aires de conservation de la biodiversité et leurs périphéries.

Affem Boussou community forest (AFC) abounds in important biological resources. This study, which contributes to its better management, examines the spatiotemporal dynamics of the vegetation and its ecological and structural characteristics to propose a zoning plan for said forest. The analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use in the AFC from Google Earth images of 2015, 2018, and 2021 revealed a regressive trend of formations: crops and fallows (−33.98%), dense dry forests (−7.92%), gallery forests (−3.46%), plantations (−100%), grassy savannahs, and meadows (−18.84%), except for tree/shrub savannahs (484.23%). The floristic inventory identified 163 species divided into 129 genera and 55 families. Fabaceae (14.02%), and Combretaceae (10.55%) are the most represented families. Anogeissus leiocarpa (5.19%) and Vitellaria paradoxa (4.72%) are the most frequent species. We note the dominance of individuals of small diameters. The regeneration potential of the AFC is 64 feet/ha due to 21 feet/ha of suckers, 29 feet/ha of seedlings, and 14 feet/ha of shoots. As a zoning plan, the AFC was subdivided into four zones: the agroforestry zone (18.80%), the sustainable production forest zone (42.22%), the buffer zone (11%), and the biological conservation zone (28%). These results constitute a scientific basis for testing ecological indicators of the sustainable management of community forests in Togo.
