Explicit Platform Descriptions for Heterogeneous Many-Core Architectures

Abstract: Heterogeneous many-core architectures offer a way to cope with energy consumption limitations of various computing systems from small mobile devices to large datacenters. However, programmers typically must consider a large diversity of architectural information to develop efficient software. In this paper we present our ongoing work towards a Platform Description Language (PDL) that enables to capture key architectural patterns of commonly used heterogeneous computing systems. PDL architecture patterns suppor… Show more

“…In these cases, an explicitly defined Platform Model (PM) is not used and the transformation becomes restrict to a specific platform [3], [13]. Some initiatives adopt the concept of explicitly defined PM, [2], [4], [25], [26]. Such initiatives aim at the design and use of Platform Models, although they do not provide specific artifacts for modeling RTOS-based embedded systems services.…”

“…Details for each PU (such as, id, number of cores, cache size, core frequency, and global memory) are extracted from the platform description file (.pdl), which needs to be provided as input to our compiler. The PDL is a platform description language for the explicit description of heterogeneous parallel computing systems [19].…”
