Experimental Tests of a Resistive SFCL Integrated With a Vacuum Interrupter

Abstract: A resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been developed using round magnesium diboride (MgB 2 ) wire. The SFCL coil was wound using an interleaved coil arrangement to minimize the total coil inductance. The SFCL coil demonstrated reliable and repeatable current limiting properties during testing. However, the wire temperature of the SFCL coil increases quickly during quench tests and several minutes are required for temperature recovery after the fault is cleared. The SFCL coil therefore wa… Show more

“…An AC SFCL integrated with a vacuum interrupter was investigated experimentally at the University of Manchester [13,14]. The potential of a fast-acting actuator whose operation is independent from the fault current level and can also be latched in the open/closed position was investigated.…”

“…The separation distance between contacts was 2 mm. A moving coil actuator was built and tested to provide controllable and high speed operation on a previous resistive SFCL integrated with a vacuum interrupter [12]. Details of the design and testing of the vacuum interrupter actuator are presented in [13].…”

“…Since SFCLs have the lower losses during normal conditions and operate immediately after the occurrence of the fault. Resistive type SFCL (RSFCL), saturated iron core SFCL (SISFCL), and hybrid SFCL (HSFCL) are the promising types of SFCL, and successful projects to develop them have been performed around the world . In this paper, it is focused on HSFCL.…”
