Experimental Study on Time Features of Particle Motion in Rotating Drums

Abstract: Rotating drums are widely used in pharmaceutical industry to coat tablets. The motion of the tablet particle is one of the most important factors affecting coating uniformity. The purpose of the research is to experimentally investigate two important time variables for the coating process, residence time and turnover time, and their dependence on operating parameters (rotation speed and filling degree of the drum). The average residence time was found to decrease with increasing rotation speed and filling degr… Show more

“…The solid residence time (SRT) in each region, which determines material renewal and dispersion behavior, is critical in practical operations. For example, in the coating process, 57,58 this parameter strongly influences the coating time and coating uniformity and thus the quality of the coated particles in the final product. Hitherto, many efforts have been devoted to studying the influence of operating parameters (e.g., drum speed and fill level) on SRT, 58 but information regarding the effect of the width of the prevalent continuous PSDs on SRT is amiss.…”

“…Video recording with subsequent image processing was used in [22] in order to study flow patterns of the rotating chamber's fill consisting of lamellar particles, depending on a change in the velocity of rotation and the degree of filling. In [23], authors employed a high-speed video recording to determine flow patterns of the steel-ball fill of a rotating chamber.…”
