Experimental Study on the Performance of a Savonius-Darrius Counter-Rotating Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Abstract: This paper describes the study of a small vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) with a combined design of Darrius and Savonius counter-rotating rotors. The main purpose of this study is to improve the extraction capabilities of a single-rotor VAWT by using two distinct rotor designs while adopting the counter-rotating technique. Given that the conversion capabilities and operational speed of the existing wind turbines are still limited, the current technique is used to enhance the efficiency and expand the operati… Show more

“…Nevertheless, researchers have shown interest in wind energy that new alternative turbine technologies are being researched especially vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) for building augmented (roof installation) for the urban environment. Vertical-axis wind turbines are known for their insensitivity to yaw angle, very low noise due to low tip speed ratios, and their mechanical and electrical heavy parts are ground positioned [6][7][8].…”

“…Wind energy is one of the potentials used. It is a type of solar energy that its harnessing does not pollute the environment as much as fossil fuels, coal and nuclear power plants [4,5]. It is abundant, renewable, widely distributed, clean, and produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation as an alternative to fossil fuels.…”

“…As the number of blades increases, changes in a Savonius rotor's dynamics and static moment decrease along with the advancing bucket's angular positions. As both designs of VAWTs suffers from inherent low inefficiencies, many efforts have been exerted over the years to enhance their performances [18,19]. Among the renowned technique is the dual-stage design of the wind turbine which can be applied to overcome this inefficiency while working efficiently under low wind speed conditions [20].…”

“…On the other hand, the other type of operating mechanism of a wind turbine is the concept of counter-rotating wind turbine (CRWT). It is found in both HAWT and VAWT, although it has just been introduced to VAWTs recently [13][14][15][16]. It is a system of dual rotors which rotate in opposite directions to one another.…”

“…In the last few years, the investigation of the CRWT has been thoroughly approached both numerically and experimentally. It was indicated that the performance of a single-rotor wind turbine (SRWT) had improved significantly with the efficiency of about 43% and 40% in terms of torque and power, respectively [13][14][15]. However, the only drawback was that the system was not able to operate at wind speeds below 5 m/s.…”
