2D CFD Simulation Study on the Performance of Various NACA Airfoils

Abstract: The wind is an energy source that has the properties of a clean, free, and readily available energy source. However, the efficiency of the existing rotors used to harness wind power is still not satisfactory. Thus, in this current study, the development and aerodynamic performance investigation of ten NACA airfoils comprising of five symmetrical and five non-symmetrical airfoils have been analyzed through the computational fluids dynamic (CFD) simulation approach. The main motive of this study was to investiga… Show more

“…Figure 18 shows the velocity contours around the Lotus-inspired blade section (airfoil). The present airfoil was compared to NACA 2412 Airfoil illustrated in Figure 19, the comparison shows that the lotus-inspired airfoil is capable of obstructing the airflow that passes through the domain of the blade and preserving the aerodynamics of an airfoil at once [17,18]. Figure 20 represents the contours of pressure on the blade airfoil.…”

“…Several studies successfully proved VAWT's sustainability by integrating its design to the existing urban infrastructure such as tall buildings, roadside dividers, and lamp posts [6,7]. Much attention was given to H-Darrieus wind turbines (HDWT) in numerous studies as it provides better efficiency than Savonius turbines [6,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Improving HDWT has been actively executed, especially to enhance its start-up properties, as it lacks compared to Savonius type VAWT.…”

“…They are being explored and considered globally in the effort to decrease the dependency on fossil fuels which are depleting, finite, producing GHG emissions and rising in price [1,2]. In particular, wind energy is considered one of the fastest-growing and used among the renewable energy sources which can produce electricity without any harm to the environment [3,4]. This is because wind energy is clean, renewable and possesses economically viable characteristics [5].…”
