Experimental study on suppression of vortex street behind perforated square cylinder

Abstract: In this study, the effects of entrainment of a fluid through a perforated surface on suppression of the vortex street behind a perforated square cylinder have been studied experimentally. The wake region has been investigated in terms of coherent flow structure, time averaged properties and effectiveness of different perforations. The quantitative measurements revealed that the perforated surfaces are only effective within a width interval of y/D = ±1.0. It has been observed that in the near wake region up to … Show more

“…Hence, by the aid of the jet, the vortex formation phenomena was shifted downstream in the wake region. Teimourian and Hacişevki [20] took a passive flow control approach to investigate perforated surfaces and the effects of fluid entrainment on the vortex shedding phenomenon and possible suppression in the wake region of square cylinder. The research investigated the wake region behind the cylinder in terms of the coherent flow structure, time averaged properties and effectiveness of different perforations.…”

“…The study demonstrates that the optimum case happened where suction was applied through all surfaces of the cylinder concerning heat transfer. Teimourian et al (2017) experimentally studied the effects of wake suppression by entrainment of fluid around the perforated square cylinder on the flow structure and vortex shedding. Some results show HFF 32,4 that velocity profiles and flow structure has been affected by different perforated surfaces and, as a result, wake structures have been reduced considerably.…”

“…They observed 86, 92 and 90% reduction for drag coefficient, root-mean-square value of lift coefficient (C Lrms ) and drag coefficient (C Drms ), respectively. In the literature one can find more different types of passive flow control devices used for square cylinders [34][35][36].…”
