Experimental study of fluid-structure interaction at a model wind turbine blade using optical measurement techniques

Abstract: Experimental studies of fluid-structure interaction on a single blade of the model wind turbine MoWiTO 1.8, which has been designed as an aerodynamically downscaled wind tunnel model of the NREL 5 MW turbine, were performed. Tailored inflow generated by means of a 2D active grid is used to induce dynamic stall through periodic angle of inflow changes. The interactions at the model wind turbine blade are investigated using two high-speed and non intrusive optical measurement techniques. The aerodynamics around … Show more

“…To prevent the systems from diverging, they are reset to the same timestamp each time the blade passes through. This synchronization of the systems has already proven to be efficient and reliable in previous studies [ Kröger et al (2020); Nietiedt et al (2019)].…”

“…Especially with the development of pulsed lasers and digital high-speed cameras, the frame rate could significantly increase. For example, [30] uses a high-speed stereo PIV system (2D-3C) to analyze dynamic stalls on rotor blades. The use of high-speed cameras allows a frame rate of several kilohertz, so the approach is referred to as time-resolved PIV in literature [31].…”

“…A current alternative is photogrammetry, which allows dimensional measurements of large-scale volumes at a lower cost than LT technology and does not require operators to have extensive training. This technology has been used since the 19th century (e.g., mapping), and nowadays, it is very valuable in different sectors such as aeronautics, civil engineering, and manufacturing [10][11][12][13]. The issues related to this method include the absence of a normative foundation to determine the system's accuracy [1] and the lack of models to predict this accuracy.…”
