Experimental Studies on Reflection Spectra in Monodomain Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Cells: Total Reflection, Subsidiary Oscillation and Its Beat or Swell Structure

Abstract: Many optical properties are presented here in the reflection spectra for monodomain cholesterics of various cell thicknesses at various angles of incidence. It is reported for the first time that left-circularly polarized light incident on a left-handed helix gives rise to a beat structure in the subsidiary oscillation, while right-circularly polarized light causes a swell to be superimposed on the subsidiary oscillation. The beat structure is ascribed to the excitation of two sets of optical eigen modes, each… Show more

“…It is well established that a CNLC stopband and its edges blue shift under increasing viewing angle h according to Equation 1: [17] k edge (h) = k edge (0)cosh¢ (1) where h¢ is the internal angle of light propagation with respect to the normal. h¢ is related, but not identical, to the external Förster exciton transfer from a 'sensitizer' to an 'emitter' dye allows for the decoupling of the excitation and emission processes in dye lasers.…”

“…Furthermore, in Fig. 3 the band where m41<0 is centered around 0=560 nm which can be used to estimate the pitch  to 394 nm according to =0/(navcos) [11]. Thus, the number of periods in the outer exocuticle is d/=26.1.…”

“…Bragg reflection at oblique incidence of single and multidomain ChNLC is also well understood from experimental and theoretical studies [10][11][12][13] as well as from calculations of the dispersion relation of the optical modes [14][15][16][17]. In contrast, research on the polarization properties of beetle cuticles at oblique incidence is at its beginning.…”

“…Let us note that such an effect for CPC with ideal periodic structure was predicted by Belyakov and Dmitrienko [35,36], and it was experimentally established in [37,38]. At larger incidence angles a three peak diffraction region is formed, having a central total reflection region and two side regions of selective reflection.…”
