A set of benchmark, medium scale, shaking table tests on corroded reinforced concrete (RC) columns is conducted with the aim of investigating the effects of corrosion damage on the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of RC bridge piers. The experimental programme consists of an uncorroded control specimen and two corroded RC column specimens, with identical structural details. An accelerated corrosion procedure is used to corrode the RC columns. The uncorroded and corroded specimens are subjected to far-field long duration ground motion excitations. The two corroded columns had 51% and 65% average mass loss ratios. The testing sequence includes slight, extensive, and complete damage levels, followed by an aftershock to examine the cascade effect on the nonlinear dynamic response of the proposed RC columns. The experimental results show that corrosion changes the failure mode of the RC columns, and has a significant negative impact on the residual strength (about 50% mass loss results in about 80% strength reduction) and drift capacity of RC columns.

Experimental investigations were carried out to examine the seismic performance of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) columns with sparsely distributed ties (under‐confined columns). Four full‐scale specimens were cast, corroded, and tested in this study. One specimen followed current seismic guidelines and acted as control column, while other three columns with larger tie spacing represented precode era under‐confined columns. Two of the three under‐confined columns were corroded to 15 and 30% corrosion degrees using a precalibrated accelerated corrosion regime. The entire study was intended to quantify the effect of inadequate confinement and corrosion on seismic response of RC columns. The results showed that the sparsely distributed transverse reinforcement resulted in lowering lateral strength and deformability of RC Columns. When these under‐confined columns were deteriorated by corrosion, their structural performance was found to have degraded significantly. It was observed that the specimens with 15 and 30% corrosion had 23 and 37.1% lower lateral load capacity respectively with respect to their un‐corroded counterpart. Furthermore, the observed lower values of ductility factors and other essential performance indicators manifested the adverse effects of inadequate confining reinforcement and aging‐related corrosion.

Korozyona maruz kalmış betonarme yapıların sismik performanslarının tahmin edilmesi korozyona uğramamış yapılara göre daha zordur. Gerçekleştirilen bu deneysel çalışma ile birlikte korozyona maruz kalmış betonarme elemanları üzerine yapılacak olan çalışmalara ışık tutulması amaçlanmıştır. Beş adet tam ölçekli betonarme kolonu hızlandırılmış korozyon yöntemi kullanılarak farklı korozyon oranları için paslandırılmıştır. Paslandırılmış betonarme kolonları sabit eksenel yük altında monotonik yüklemeye tabi tutularak, akma ve nihai yükleri, süneklik oranları ve enerji yutma kapasiteleri deneysel olarak elde edilmiştir. Betonarme kolonlarındaki gerçek korozyon oranları yükleme deneylerinden sonra betonarme kolonlarının kırılarak ve gömülü olan tüm betonarme donatılarının çıkartılması ile elde edilmiştir. Yapılan deneysel çalışma sonucunda, monotonik yüklemenin tersinir-tekrarlanır yüklemeye göre zayıf yönleri göz önüne alınan deprem indeksleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen deneysel sonuçlar doğrultusunda ileriki korozyon çalışmaları için önemli önerilerde bulunulmuştur. Gerçekleştirilen bu çalışma kapsamında, paslanmış betonarme kolonlarının monotonik yükleme etkisi altında süneklik oranları ve enerji yutma kapasiteleri artan korozyon oranına bağlı olarak azalmıştır. Monotonik yükleme etkisi altında pasın belirli oranlarına kadar sağlamış olduğu sargı etkisi ve buna bağlı olarak deprem indekslerindeki artışlar net bir şekilde görülememiştir. Tek doğrultuda göçme modu kabulü ile yapılacak olan sismik değerlendirmelerde kullanılmak üzere paslanmış betonarme kolonların süneklik ve enerji yutma kapasitelerinin tahmin edilebilmesi için iki ampirik model geliştirilmiştir.
