“…Total ablation of synovium in the proximal palmar and plantar joint pouch was not achieved with Ho‐166 FHMA treatment; however, multifocal radiation‐induced necrosis was apparent. Similar partial necrosis of synovium was also reported after Sm‐153 M treatment in horses and Ho‐166 FHMA treatment in rabbits 32,38 . The proliferation of synoviocytes characteristic in control joints was replaced by synovial necrosis in RSYN joints.…”

“…The rapid and deep coagulative necrosis probably occurred because of the high dose of Ho‐166 FHMA, resulting in substantial tissue damage, as was observed in rabbit knees 4 days after RSYN with Ho‐166 FHMA 38 . The distribution of histopathologic changes corresponded with the unequal distribution observed by scintigraphy: Changes in the plantar/palmar pouch were profound compared with those in the dorsal recess of the joint capsule.…”

“…40 However, studies showed transient harmful effects of [ 166 Ho]FHMA treatment on immature rabbit cartilage. A higher rate of cartilage matrix synthesis in immature animals compared with adult animals 41 might make the chondrocytes in young cartilage more susceptible to transient irradiation induced derangement of matrix production.…”

“…In recent years several other radionuclides like Holmium-166, Rhenium-188, Samarium-153, etc. have successfully been introduced [10-18]. …”
