Experimental larval rearing of the Japanese sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) in Severnaya bay (Slavyansky bay, Sea of Japan)

Abstract: Experimental larval rearing of the Japanese sea cucumber in a mini plant in Severnaya bay (Slavyansky bay, Sea of Japan) was carried out. The experiment did not reveal any relevant difference in time or speed of reaching different larval development stages or survival rate of the sea cucumber either with the diet supplemented with pigmented yeast Rhodotorula benthica or when fed with the Chaetoceros muelleri and Dunaliella salina phytoplankton. In the lack of the traditional phytoplankton-based fodder, it appe… Show more

“…For example, Chaetoceros calcitrans is effective for rearing larval Bohadschia marmorata [21], H. spinifera [22], and Parastichopus californicus [19], and dry yeast S. cerevisiae or sea yeast R. benthica can be used as stable food for A. japonicus larvae [20,31,33]. However, multispecies diets are usually used to rear holothurian larvae [5,13,17,20,29,30,50]. Combined diets are generally more nutritionally 6 Aquaculture Nutrition balanced and efficient than single diets.…”

“…Identifying suitable diets is the most important step for sea cucumber hatchery. Diets should be high-quality and relatively inexpensive and not be difficult or sophisticated to culture [17][18][19][20]. Traditional diets for rearing sea cucumber larvae have mainly used live microalgae.…”

“…In the course of experimental studies, the red yeast Rhodotorula bentica was used as a feed base for larvae, and for settled juveniles as a feed additive. The method of laboratory cultivation of Rhodotorula bentica yeast biomass was described by us in a previously published work [4].…”
