Experimental Labyrinthotomy in Monkeys by Argon and Carbon Dioxide Lasers

Abstract: The horizontal semicircular canal of squirrel monkeys was irradiated unilaterally with either an argon or carbon dioxide laser. Postoperatively, there was a small but significant reduction in caloric-induced ENG responses to 45 degrees thermal stimulation. The principal morphologic effect of laser irradiation was a plug of fibrous tissue or new bone within the lumen of the lesioned semicircular canal.

“…Over the past decade a great deal of work has been done on hearing preservation with selective occlusion or ablation of the semicircular canals. 1–25 Posterior semicircular canal occlusion has gained widespread popularity in the treatment of intractable benign paroxysmal vertigo because of its high rate of success and very low rate of hearing loss. 5–16,18 Selective ablation of the semicircular canals has also been used to improve access to the petrous apex and clivus tumors, also with low rates of hearing loss.…”

“…Die Methode der laserchirurgischen Okklusion des hinteren Bogengangs schnitt in einer Studie beim Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen der konventionell-chirurgischen Okklusion des hinteren Bogengangs sogar besser ab [134]. Das Verfahren geht auf Studien von Wilpizeski und Anthony zurück [135,136]. Sowohl Argon-und CO 2 -Lasersysteme sind für die Koagulation des Endolymphschlauches geeignet [137,138].…”

“…It has been postulated that laser coagulation might be such an atraumatic, nonmechanical means of sealing the membranous labyrinth with selective vestibular ablation. Wilpizeski et al 25,26 and Anthony and Ackley 19,27 demonstrated that argon laser irradiation to the vestibular labyrinth does not adversely affect hearing. Unfortunately, it also does not consistently occlude the membranous labyrinth.…”
