Experimental investigation on high conversion free‐radical polymerization of behenyl acrylate

Abstract: SYNOPSISAn experimental investigation on the kinetics of free-radical polymerization of behenyl ( a mixture of 14.8% n-octadecyl, 15.1% n-eicosyl, and 70.1% n-docosyl) acrylate initiated with benzoyl peroxide was conducted at 70°C using a HAAKE rotational viscometer. Molecular weight measurements and differential scanning calorimetric studies of the samples are also described and the results are compared with those obtained by batch reactions conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere. A high monomer order of 1.61 … Show more

“…If the azobenzene at the end of the long side chain is switched from trans to cis,t here are interactions between the long alkyl side chains. Crystallization of P-20-Azoi s similar to that of polyethylene or polyacrylates with long side chains but withouta zobenzene, [19] which explainsw hy ap hase transition at about 40 8Cw as observed for cis-P-20-Azo.…”

“…The polymerization of alkyl acrylates/methacrylates in bulk and in solution shows a strong Trommsdorff effect or gel effect even though the polymerization is carried out above the glass transition temperature (T g ). 35 This results in the broadening of the MWD of the resulting polymers. Due to the gel effect, considerable deviation from the normal kinetic parameters is observed in high-conversion polymerization.…”

“…We recently investigated the polymerization behavior of higher alkyl acrylates and methacrylates to derive their structure-reactivity relationship. 35,36 The large demand for poly(n-alkyl acrylates) with narrow MWDs prompted research toward improving processes for the polymerization of n-alkyl acrylates. Like many industrial polymers, polymerizations to synthesize PPDs/FIs are conducted by free-radical polymerization.…”

“…The high-conversion free-radical polymerization of n-alkyl (meth)acrylates shows a strong Trommsdorff effect or gel effect even though the polymerization is carried out above the glasstransition temperature. 3 Because of the gel effect, a considerable deviation from the normal kinetic parameters with a broadening of the molecular weight distribution is observed in high-conversion polymerization. Although acrylates can be polymerized anionically, the preparation of welldefined polymers is hindered by a number of side reactions.…”
