Experimental Investigation of Pyrolysis Process of Agricultural Biomass Mixture

This work studied the catalyst activity of activated carbon (AC) supported Co, Fe and Co-Fe oxides in catalytic cracking of waste cooking oil. Reactions were carried out in a fixed bed reactor at 450 °C with WHSV 9 hr–1. Single metal Co/AC and Fe/AC catalysts with different metal loading (2.5–15 wt.%) and bimetal xCo-yFe/AC (x, y = 2.5 to 12.5 wt.%; x + y =15 wt.%) catalysts were investigated. Co/AC and Fe/AC catalysts both contributed to significant liquid yield with high selectivity towards C15 and C17 hydrocarbons. Fe/AC catalysts gave high C5 – C20 hydrocarbon yield whereas Co/AC attained more palmitic (C16) and oleic (C18) acid conversion. Synergistic effect in two metals Co-Fe/AC catalysts had further improved the liquid hydrocarbon yield (up to ~93 %) and fatty acid conversion (up to 94 %). The best catalyst, 10Co-5Fe/AC had been further tested under the effect of reaction temperature, feed flow rate (WHSV) and deactivation for its catalytic performance.

Effect of Operating Parameters on Agricultural Biomass Mixture Pyrolysis Process in a Batch Reactor

Many phenomena affect devolatilization of biomass particles, including mass and heat transfer, chemical reactions and physical transformation. Mathematical models that are capable to describe pyrolysis phenomena can greatly assist the large-scale development and optimization of pyrolysis processes, but to be implemented into large-scale simulation the models need to be simplified at a certain degree. In the present study, an existing mathematical model is used to describe the pyrolysis of a single particle of biomass. It couples the heat transfer equations with the chemical kinetics equations. The common Euler explicit method is used for solving the heat transfer equation and the two-step pyrolysis kinetics equations. The model equation is solved for a sphere particle with a radius of 0.001 m and temperature ranging from 300 to 923 K. An original numerical model for the pyrolysis of agricultural biomass mixture is proposed and relevant equations solved using original program realized in MATLAB. Simplified particle model was validated with the experimental data in a non-isothermal pyrolysis reactor. The sample was heated in the temperature range of 300–923 K at average heating rates of 21, 30 and 54 K/min. The model results showed reasonable agreement with experiments. The difference (between the experimental and model results) is slightly more prominent with decreasing heating rate (21 and 30 K/min), but model results are in much better agreement with the experimental date for higher heating rate (54 K/min). It is demonstrated that a constitutive equation can be used to express devolatilization rate for higher heating rates.

In comparison to coal, biomass is characterized by a higher content of volatile matter. It is a renewable source of energy which has many advantages from an ecological point of view. Understanding the physical phenomena of pyrolysis and representing them with a mathematical model is the primary step in the design of pyrolysis reactors. In the present study, an existing mathematical model is used to describe the pyrolysis of a single solid particle of biomass. It couples the heat transfer equations with the chemical kinetics equations.A finite difference method is used for solving the heat transfer equation and the two-step pyrolysis kinetics equations. The model equation is solved for a slab particle of equivalent dimension 0.001 m and temperature ranging from 300 to 923 K. An original numerical model for the pyrolysis of wood chips is proposed and relevant equations solved using original program realized in MATLAB.To check the validity of the numerical results, experimental results of pyrolysis of woody biomass in laboratory facility was used.The samples were heated over a range of temperature from 300 to 923 K with three different heating rates of 21, 32 and 55 K/min, and the weight loss was measured. The simulation results as well as the results obtained from thermal decomposition process indicate that the temperature peaks at maximum weight loss rate change with the increase in heating rate. The experimental results showed that the simulation results are in good agreement and can be successfully used to understand the degradation mechanism of solid reaction.
