Experimental investigation into ground vibrations induced by very high speed trains on a non-ballasted track

Abstract: a b s t r a c tA field measurement of ground vibration was performed on the Beijing À Shanghai high-speed railway in China. In this paper, the experimental results of vertical ground vibration accelerations induced by very high speed trains running over a non-ballasted track on embankment with speeds from 300 to 410 km/h are reported and analyzed in detail for the first time. Characteristics of ground vibration accelerations in both time and frequency domains are analyzed based on the test data. It is shown th… Show more

“…To attempt to address ground-borne and building vibration and noise issues, field experiments and surveys were conducted in the United Kingdom (Thompson, 2009), the United State (Sanayei et al, 2013(Sanayei et al, , 2014, Belgium (Connolly et al, 2015a;Kouroussis et al, 2013), Spain (Maffei et al, 2013;Torija et al, 2011;Galvín & Domínguez, 2009), Greece (Vogiatzis, 2012a), Germany (Degen et al, 2006;Elmenhorst et al, 2012) and China (Zhai et al, 2015;Ling et al, 2010). The different indicators like peak particle velocity (PPV), root-mean square value (a w ) (International Organization for Standardization, 1997Standardization, , 2003, vibration velocity level (v dB ) (Federal Transit Administration (US), 2006) and weighted vibration severity KB F (Deutsches Institut für Normung, 1999) were compared (Kouroussis et al, 2014c) and used to evaluate the influence of vibrations.…”

“…In order to overcome some of the limitations associated with numerical analysis methods, researchers have performed lots of in situ experiments on various railway sites to obtain the practical vibration propagation characteristics [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. As well known, a moving train radiates vibrations as both body and surface waves in various directions, of which the Rayleigh surface wave carries most of the energy due to different geometric attenuation [17].…”

“…Most experimental studies on railway induced ground vibration concentrate on the measurements of the ground vibration, for example, [7][8][9][10][11]. Fortunately, it is now almost a standard to determine the soil properties by wave measurements and analysis; see examples in [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19].…”
