“…Morphologically, intraerythrocytic forms of R. vitalii closely resemble B. vogeli. Piroplasms are often scarce in the bloodstream, but might be more frequent in the acute phase of infection (CARINI;MACIEL, 1914;CARINI, 1948;BARROS, 2005;DA SILVA et al, 2011). The present study demonstrated that 6.8% of the samples were positive by PCR, whereas 3.9% were positive by morphological examination.…”

“…This protozoan infects dogs and is supposedly transmitted by ticks and causes a disease that is popularly known as "nambiuvú" (bloody ears) or "plague of blood". This illness has been described only in the south and southeast regions of Brazil (BRAGA, 1935;BARROS, 2004BARROS, , 2005DA SILVA et al, 2011). In a recent study conducted in southern Brazil R. vitalii was molecularly characterized (SOARES et al, 2011).…”

“…In a study by Fighera et al (2010), the main clinical signs in dogs that were naturally infected with R. vitalii were slight to severe jaundice (100%), signs of gastroenteritis (60%), vomiting (34.3%) and hemorrhage (28.6%). According to a study carried out by Silva et al (2011), dogs that were experimentally infected with R. vitalii presented fever, increased heart rate, apathy and anorexia. Weight loss and diarrhea were less frequent.…”

“…This protozoon can be seen as free forms in plasma and in erythrocytes, monocytes and endothelial cell cytoplasm, within cerebral capillaries and in the aorta and jugular vein (LORETTI & BARROS, 2005). It is easier to view the parasite during fever peaks in blood smears (PESTANA, 1910b;SILVA et al, 2011). It has been shown that the tick Amblyomma aureolatum is the vector responsible for its transmission (SOARES et al, 2014).…”

“…Hemorrhagic processes may leads to anemia and may be due to thrombocytopenia, which represent a drop in platelet count caused by decreased platelet production, aggregation or destruction (Paim et al, 2012). Anemia is a classic laboratory finding present in canine rangeliosis (Eiras et al, 2014;Fighera et al, 2010;França et al, 2014;Lemos et al, 2017;Silva et al, 2011). The hypoproteinemia observed herein may be explained by the anorexia, weight loss (Eiras et al, 2014;França et al, 2014;Lemos et al, 2017;Paim et al, 2012), and hypoalbuminemia (Fredo et al, 2017), commonly related with canine rangeliosis.…”
