Experimental Evidence of the 90° Stop Band in the GSI UNILAC

Abstract: In a particle accelerator with a periodic structure beam space charge force may excite resonant beam emittance growth if the particle's transverse phase advance approaches 90 degrees . A recent simulation study with the PARMILA code [D. Jeon, Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 12, 054204 (2009)]10.1103/PhysRevSTAB.12.054204 has shown the feasibility of measuring the stop band of this fourth order resonance in the GSI Universal Linear Accelerator UNILAC and proposed its experimental verification, which is reported here… Show more

“…Emittance evolution for space charge dominated beams has been one of many important topics in high-power beam accelerators and storage rings. Possible sources of emittance growth in LINACs are synchrobetatron coupling, halo formation induced by collective envelope modes or structure resonances [1], envelope resonance, and systematic fourth order resonance [2].…”

“…Many halo generation mechanisms have been studied such as space charge coupling resonances [2], mismatch [3], envelope instability [4], etc. Recently it is discovered that a fourth order space charge resonance 4 ¼ 360 is excited in high intensity linear accelerators, practically replacing the envelope instability when depressed phase advance per cell is close to 90 [5] and experimentally confirmed [6].…”
