This study aims to develop a novel version of bi input-extended Kalman filter (BI-EKF)-based estimationtechnique in order to increase the number of state and parameter estimations required for speed-sensorless direct vector control (DVC) systems, which perform velocity and position controls of induction motors (IMs). For this purpose, all states required for the speed-sensorless DVC systems, besides the stator resistance Rs , the rotor resistance Rr , the load torque tL including the viscous friction term, and the reciprocal of total inertia 1/jT , are simultaneously estimated by the novel BI-EKF algorithm using the measured phase currents and voltages. The effectiveness of the proposed speed-sensorless DVC systems is tested by simulations under the challenging variations of Rs , Rr , tL , jT , and velocity/position reference. Later, the state and parameter estimations of the novel BI-EKF algorithm are confirmed with real-time experiments in a wide speed range. Finally, in both transient and steady states, a satisfactory estimation and control performance that make this study unique are achieved.

Fault-tolerant Control of a Wind Turbine with Generator Stator Inter-turn Faults

Original scientific paperFaults of wind turbine generator electromechanical parts are common and very expensive. This paper introduces a generator fault-tolerant control scheme for variable-speed variable-pitch wind turbines that can be applied regardless to the AC generator used. The focus is on generator stator isolation inter-turn fault that can be diagnosed and characterised before triggering the safety device. An extension of the conventional wind turbine control structure is proposed that prevents the fault propagation while power delivery under fault is deteriorated as less as possible compared to healthy machine conditions. Fault-induced and inherent asymmetries of the generator are estimated and respected by the field-oriented control of the generator to eliminate torque oscillations. An approach for asymmetry detection based on an unscented Kalman filter is proposed. Presented fault-tolerant control strategy is developed taking into account its modular implementation and installation in available control systems of existing wind turbines to extend their exploitable life span and increase energy production. Kvarovi elektromehaničkih dijelova generatora vjetroagregatačesti su i izrazito skupi. U ovom radu predstavljen je koncept na kvarove otpornog upravljanja generatorom vjetroagregata s promjenjivom brzinom vrtnje i zakretom lopatica primjenjiv bez obzira na tip korištenog izmjeničnog generatora. Naglasak je stavljen na oštećenje izolacije unutar namota jedne faze statora generatora koje se može dijagnosticirati i okarakterizirati prije aktiviranja sustava zaštite. Predložena je nadogradnja postojećeg sustava upravljanja vjetroagregatom koja sprječava širenje kvara i pritom postižečim manje smanjenje proizvodnje električne energije u odnosu na normalan režim rada. Tako er je prikazano vektorsko upravljanje generatorom koje uzima u obzir nesimetrije generatora, kako one nastale uslijed djelovanja kvara, tako i one inherentne. U radu je prikazan pristup za otkrivanje nesimetrija generatora zasnovan na nederivacijskom Kalmanovu filtru. Predstavljena strategija upravljanja razvijena je uvažavajući mogućnost modularnog nadovezivanja na postojeće algoritme upravljanja već postavljenih vjetroagregata s ciljem produženja njihova životnog vijeka i povećanja proizvodnje energije. Sensorless Control of Late-Stage Offshore DFIG-WT with FSTP Converters by Using EKF to Ride through Hybrid Faults

Abstract:A hybrid fault scenario in a late-stage offshore doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbine (DFIG-WT) with converter open-circuit fault and position sensor failure is investigated in this paper. An extended Kalman filter (EKF)-based sensorless control strategy is utilized to eliminate the encoder. Based on the detailed analysis of the seventh-order dynamic state space model of DFIG, along with the input voltage signals and measured current signals, the EKF algorithm for DFIG is designed to estimate the rotor speed and position. In addition, the bridge arm open circuit in the back-to-back (BTB) power converter of DFIG is taken as a commonly-encountered fault due to the fragility of semiconductor switches. Four-switch three-phase (FSTP) topology-based fault-tolerant converters are employed for post-fault operation by considering the minimization of switching losses and reducing the circuit complexity. Moreover, a simplified space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique is proposed to reduce the computational burden, and a voltage balancing scheme is put forward to increase the DC-bus voltage utilization rate. Simulation studies are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink2017a (MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA) to demonstrate the validity of the proposed hybrid fault-tolerant strategy for DFIG-WT, with the wind speed fluctuation, measurement noises and grid voltage sag taken into consideration.
