Experimental characterization of the TOFPET2 ASIC

Abstract: We present the experimental characterization of the TOFPET2, a readout and digitization ASIC for radiation detectors using Silicon Photomultipliers. The circuit is designed in CMOS 110 nm technology, has 64 independent channels and is optimized for time-of-flight measurement in PET or other applications. The chip has quad-buffered TDCs and charge integration QDCs in each channel. The Coincidence Time Resolution (CTR) of 511 keV photon pairs from a 22Na point source measured with 2 × 2 × 3 mm3 L… Show more

“…However, limitations imposed by commercially available electronics need to be traced and understood to characterize their origin and propose approaches to overcome them. A promising candidate for multi-channel readout is the TOFPET2 ASIC developed by PETsys Electronics S.A., a 64-channel integrated circuit which can process data rates of up to 600 kcps per individual channel, featuring a threethreshold trigger logic for dark count rejection [13]. The TOFPET2 ASIC consumes a maximum power of 8.2 mW per channel (including signal digitization) and has shown promising performance results in prior studies [14]- [16].…”

“…The leading edge CFD has been implemented in the 128 channels VFAT3 front-end ASIC [27]. The CT-TOT has been implemented in the 64-channel TOFPET2 ASIC [28,29]. We are presently designing an electronic circuit for the implementation of the CF-TOT method.…”

“…The data acquisition (DAQ) and processing system TOFPET2 produced by PETsys Electronics-Medical PET Detectors, S.A. (Oeiras, Portugal), was used [27,28]. The system consists of a central DAQ module, which can accompany up to 8 front-end boards (FEB), where two detector modules fit on one board.…”
