Experimental Assessment of Specific Absorption Rate Using Room Electromagnetics

Abstract: Abstract-A closed room environment is viewed as a lossy cavity, characterized by possibly a line of sight (LOS) component and diffuse scattering parts from walls and internal obstacles. A theory used in acoustics and reverberation chambers is applied for the electromagnetics case, and main issues related to measurement systems, antennas characteristics, diffuse energy properties, and human exposure are investigated. The goal of this paper aims first towards validation of the assessment of the reverberation tim… Show more

“…Room electromagnetics theory is interesting, as it does not require complete knowledge of the propagation environment, and it offers an alternative description of diffuse scattering in a room using only simple parameters. Validation of room electromagnetic theory was investigated for cellular frequencies [18][19][20]. However, very few results are available in the analysis on frequency dependency of room electromagnetics.…”

“…In this section, the acquisition of absorption coefficient is presented [13], [15], [16]. As is mentioned above, the average absorptive coefficients of an indoor scenario can be calculated from the dimensions and reflective coefficients of materials.…”

“…S o  o (f) can thus be simplified as S o . The human presence, which will result in a decrease of reverberation time in indoor scenarios, must also be taken into consideration [16]. To this end, the influence of human presence is included in the model using effective coefficients:…”

“…There has been concern that a metallic enclosure could potentially act like an imperfect resonant cavity, leading to RF hot spots where the electromagnetic fields are enhanced [5,6]. This could increase the severity of the RF exposure for the Wi-Fi device usages in such an environment.…”
