Experiences of two centers of bariatric surgery in the treatment of intragastrale band migration after gastric banding—the importance of the German multicenter observational study for quality assurance in obesity surgery 2005 and 2006

Abstract: Band migration requires band removal. Different symptoms and complications influence the kind of band removal. Multicentre data were evident in the case of high long-term complication rate after ASGB. Data of the German multicentre trial show the trend from restrictive bariatric procedures to malabsorptive approach.

“…12 and 13). Also, port site infection has been reported to be the first symptom of erosion, 22 as seen in some of our patients (Table 1). Although 1 study (23 pregnancies in a series of 359 patients) reported that pregnancy after adjustable gastric banding was not associated with severe complications, 23 band migration after pregnancy has occurred in other studies, 24,25 and severe vomiting in early pregnancy has been hypothesized to be the cause of band migration.…”

“…The incidence of complications varies greatly between various series of cases. [5][6][7] Nevertheless, the rate of complications observed is generally decreasing with improvement in the learning curve. 7 Among the later complications noted is LAGB erosion, with an incidence varying between 0.6% and 11%, that ultimately requires extraction of the LAGB.…”

“…7 Among the later complications noted is LAGB erosion, with an incidence varying between 0.6% and 11%, that ultimately requires extraction of the LAGB. 5 LAGB erosion can be silent and rarely causes peritonitis, but it should be suspected in any patient with unexplained weight gain after initial weight loss or if wound infection develops at the port site. [5][6] The causes for LAGB erosion are poorly understood, but many recent theories explain why it is a less common complication compared with the initial LAGB procedures.…”
