Remote Supergroup for Chemistry Undergraduates: An Inclusive Scientific Community for Primarily Undergraduate Institutions

The Remote Supergroup for Chemistry Undergraduates (RSCU) is a community of students and faculty from primarily undergraduate institutions that aims to (1) engage students in discussions of chemical research, (2) inform students of further educational and career pathways, (3) increase awareness and discourse of equity issues in science, and (4) foster scientific community across institutions. RSCU engaged participants in impactful virtual activities during the summer of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic precluded in-person undergraduate research experiences, and the program continued in 2021 as in-person research resumed. Results from selfreported surveys show that RSCU successfully achieved its aims both years, and both students and faculty research mentors benefited from participation. The diverse activities and scientific network cultivated by RSCU complement undergraduate research experiences and could be adapted to other disciplines.

Visokoškolski centri za razvoj karijere postaju sve važniji element organizacije visokoškolskih ustanova širom sveta, a Republika Srbija ne predstavlja izuzetak. U Srbiji je, međutim, zabeležen nedostatak aktivnosti studenata u razvoju veština za uključivanje u tržište rada, kao i veština potrebnih na tržištu rada na različitim poslovima (tzv. prenosive veštine -transferrable skills). Razvijanje tih veština kod studenata postaje važan zadatak visokoškolskih centara za razvoj karijere. U procesu razvoja prakse karijernog vođenja i savetovanja na visokoškolskim ustanovama u Srbiji, na Fakultetu za inženjerski menadžment je uveden obavezni kurs Upravljanje karijerom sa ciljem da studenti razvijaju veštine potrebne za ulazak na tržište rada. U prvoj godini sprovođenja kursa, studenti su pre i posle pohađanja ovog kursa imali prilike da u vidu ankete iskažu svoja očekivanja od Centra za razvoj karijere. Očekivanja studenata od Centra su se promenila posle pohađanja kursa i postali su spremniji za aktivniju ulogu u upravljanju sopstvenom karijerom. Stoga je neophodno da visokoškolske ustanove u Srbiji uvedu obavezne programe čiji je cilj razvijanje karijere svih studenata.

How Do Career Development Courses Help Chinese Undergraduate Students Achieve Healthy and Quality Career Development?

Postsecondary institutions worldwide generally provide career development courses or similar courses to better prepare undergraduate students for healthy and quality future careers. Understanding whether these career development courses positively affect students’ career-related outcomes is crucial. Utilizing survey data collected from a large research university located in the eastern part of China, we found that students who have taken at least one career course exhibited career awareness and career planning abilities that were 0.096 and 0.147 units higher, respectively, than those of students who have not taken career courses, with other variables held constant. More specifically, an additional career course was statistically significantly associated with a 0.099, 0.084, and 0.175 unit increase in students’ career awareness, job search self-efficacy, and career planning ability, respectively. A student’s college major and annual family income seemed to be good predictors for a student’s career awareness, job search self-efficacy, and career-planning ability. Furthermore, the more career courses that a student took, the higher the career awareness, job search self-efficacy, and career planning ability that the student had. With these findings in mind, our study recommends postsecondary stakeholders to leverage such courses to help students better prepare for a healthy and quality career development.
