Research on fault detection (FD) and condition monitoring (CM) of rotating electrical generators for modern wind turbines has addressed a wide variety of technologies. Among these, permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) and the analysis of their electromagnetic signatures in the presence of faults deserve emphasis in this paper. PMSGs are prominent in the offshore wind industry, and methods for FD and CM of PMSGs based on electromagnetic measurements are extensively discussed in academia. This paper is a concise review of FD and CM in wind turbines and PMSGs. Terminology and fundamentals of PMSG’s operation are introduced first, aiming to offer an easy read and good reference to a broad audience of engineers and data scientists. Experience and research challenges with stator winding failures are also discussed.

The limitations of thermal, vibration, or electrical monitoring of electric machines such as false indications, low sensitivity, and difficulty of fault interpretation have recently been exposed. This has led to a shift in the direction in research towards applying new techniques for improving the reliability of condition monitoring. With the changing environment, the purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the recent trend in the industrial demand and research activity in condition monitoring technology. The new developments in insulation testing, electrical testing, flux analysis, transient analysis, and fault prognostics are summarized. The future challenges and recommendations for future work for the new technologies are also stated to support researchers target research/development efforts according to industrial needs.

Este trabalho apresenta uma ampla discussão sobre os testes mais relevantes, on-line e off-line, empregados em âmbito industrial para o desenvolvimento da manutenção preditiva de motores de indução trifásicos (MITs). A definição de procedimentos apropriados, focados em prognóstico de falhas, é de vital importância para o programa de manutenção da empresa, pois possibilita identificar, antecipadamente, possíveis falhas nas máquinas que poderiam acarretar a parada dos processos e, consequentemente, substanciais prejuízos financeiros. Com o intuito de aplicar os conceitos avaliados em um caso prático, foram obtidos relatórios dos testes empregados no programa de manutenção de uma grande companhia multinacional do ramo de produção alimentícia, que foram avaliados criticamente pelos autores e então identificadas falhas de procedimentos, assim como propostas novas rotinas de ensaios para se ampliar as possibilidades de prognóstico dos problemas que acometem os motores de sua linha de produção.
