Fault Detection and Condition Monitoring of PMSGs in Offshore Wind Turbines

Abstract: Research on fault detection (FD) and condition monitoring (CM) of rotating electrical generators for modern wind turbines has addressed a wide variety of technologies. Among these, permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) and the analysis of their electromagnetic signatures in the presence of faults deserve emphasis in this paper. PMSGs are prominent in the offshore wind industry, and methods for FD and CM of PMSGs based on electromagnetic measurements are extensively discussed in academia. This paper i… Show more

“…To regulate the generator shaft's speed, a chopper is necessary. One noteworthy advantage of PMSG-based WECSs is the ability to use a diode rectifier without relying on self-exciting capacitors, making them a cost-effective and flexible alternative in wind turbine design [33]. Despite proposals for the use of VRGs in WECSs dating back to the 1990s, their performance evaluation has been limited to simulations and a few research studies, with no actual deployment.…”

The presence of permanent magnets in a PMSG eliminates the need for a magnetizing current to maintain a constant flux in the air gap.…”

“…In the near future, both the power capacity and size of a single commercial wind turbine are expected to increase [1]. However, if there is a severe fault in a large wind turbine, it often requires complex and costly maintenance works [2]. This is particularly the case for offshore wind turbines, which are much more difficult to access to than their onshore counterparts.…”
