Introduction: Globally, babies born with low birth weight and preterm accounts for 25 million and 15 million respectively. The magnitude of preterm and low birth weight was 29.1% in Ethiopia by 2011. Around 70% neonatal deaths occur in low birth weight and preterm babies. Most studies demonstrated kangaroo mother care to be more effective than incubator care for these neonates but there are limited studies in Ethiopia. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to assess the acceptability, knowledge, attitude and practice of kangaroo mother care in public hospitals.

First published May 19, 2011 doi:10.1152/japplphysiol.00370.2011.-"Extreme" housing conditions, such as isolation (single housing) or crowding, are stressful for rats, and their deleterious impact on behavior is well documented. To determine whether more subtle variations in housing can affect animal physiology, the present study tested the hypothesis that the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) of adult male rats housed in pairs during the juvenile period (postnatal day 21 to adulthood) does not differ from that of animals housed in triads. Because neonatal stress augments the neuroendocrine responsiveness to stress and HVR, experiments were performed both on "control" (undisturbed) animals and rats subjected to neonatal maternal separation (NMS; 3 h/day, postnatal days 3-12). At adulthood, ventilatory activity was measured by whole body plethysmography under normoxic and hypoxic conditions (inspired fraction of O2 ϭ 0.12; 20 min). The ventilatory and body temperature responses to hypoxia of rats raised in triads were less than those of rats housed in pairs. For the HVR, however, the attenuation induced by triad housing was more important in NMS rats. Triad housing decreased "basal" plasma corticosterone, but increased estradiol and testosterone levels. Much like the HVR, housing-related decrease in corticosterone level was greater in NMS than control rats. We conclude that modest changes in housing conditions (pairs vs. triads) during the juvenile period can influence basic homeostatic functions, such as temperature, endocrine, and respiratory regulation. Housing conditions can influence (even eliminate) the manifestations of respiratory plasticity subsequent to deleterious neonatal treatments. Background: Objective of the study was to assess the feasibility and efficacy of early KMC in VLBW babies receiving respiratory care in NICU. Methods: This is a prospective observational study conducted in a Multispecialty hospital with a level 3B NICU. Results: A total of 19 babies on non-invasive respiratory support and partial parenteral nutrition through PICC line were included in the study. Most of the babies (84%) had birth weight of less than 1250 gm. Forty eight percent of the babies were less than 30 weeks of gestation at the time of commencement of KMC. Average weight gain in our study was 11.27gm/kg/day which was comparable to others. KMC was initiated at an average of 7.91 days of age and the average duration was1.69 + 0.6 hour/day. 84.2% of the mothers did KMC for less than 3 hrs per day while 15.8% of them did KMC beyond 3 hrs per day. Of the 19 babies, 17 of them were on High flow nasal canula Oxygen and 13 of them on CPAP during KMC. Only one baby succumbed to NEC during the study. The most common reason for discontinuation of KMC in the study group was lack of confidence in the mother (31%) which was overcome by constant support from the nursing staff and the family members. Conclusions: Kangaroo mother care was found to be a feasible and effective method of care of VLBW babies even while on non-invasive respiratory support in NICU.
