“…The extent of neck dissection and the potential necessity for lateral parotidectomy are determined by the anatomic location of the metastasis as well as by the primary tumor site [312,[321][322][323]. Melanomas of the parietal/frontal, temporal, latero-frontal, buccal or auricular region, located anterior of a virtual plane through the external auditory canal, drain via parotid lymph nodes and/or lymph nodes along the facial nerve (at the mandibular edge) into cervical lymph node basins.…”

“…O'Brien et al 21 examined 998 patients receiving care at the Sydney (Australia) Melanoma Unit and noted that those with scalp melanomas had a substantially worse chance of survival than those with ear/face/neck melanomas, adjusting for patient and tumor characteristics, presence of positive lymph nodes and distant metastases, and treatment by elective lymph node dissection. Ringborg et al, 22 examining 581 melanomas registered in the population-based Sweden National Cancer Registry for the 1959-1974 period, found that patients with melanomas of the scalp/neck and auricle/external ear canal had notably worse prognosis than those with melanomas on the face, adjusting for other variables.…”
