Experience of early pubertal development: a preliminary analysis

Abstract: Psychological research in early pubertal development is scant. Much of the directly relevant literature is dated and reflects a tendency to search for 'psychopathology'. Studies have unravelled few long-term effects on psychological functioning but research findings are inconclusive due to methodological flaws. In the absence of a clear understanding of what is important, it may be helpful to ask those with personal experience what for them is salient about experiences of early pubertal development. “…In the same 2002 study, early initiation into partnered sex (whether conceptualized as an indicator of hormonal levels or of social entrainment in a less inhibited sexual career) was associated with a greater propensity to masturbate in adulthood. Early pubertal development has been found to be correlated with higher levels of sexuality in adulthood (Belsky, Steinberg, & Draper, 1991;Moffit, Caspi, Belsky, & Silva, 1992), with both differential hormonal levels and different social environments arguably contributing to these patterns (Liao, Missenden, Hallam, & Conway, 2005;Udry, 1988). Though disagreeing on the exact mechanisms involved, studies agree that sexual contact during childhood or adolescence is correlated with an intensification of sexual behaviors in adulthood (Browning & Laumann, 1997Laumann et al, 2003).…”

“…In addition, the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics can lead to an increase of unwanted sexual attention from the opposite sex (e.g., Flannery et al, 1993;Liao, Missenden, Hallam, & Conway, 2005). Accordingly, McMaster, Connolly, Pepler, and Craig (2002) reported an increased frequency of cross-gender sexual harassment, but not same-gender sexual harassment, from Grade 6 to Grade 8.…”

“…Liao ve ark. (18) tarafından yapılan çalışmada yedi yaş öncesinde pubertal gelişimi başlamış 31-65 yaş arası beş kadınla derinlemesine görüşme yapılmış ve "farklı olma" ve "yetişkin çocuk" temaları bulunmuştur. Kadınlar, akranları ergenliğe ulaştığında bile kendilerinki daha önce başladığı için farklı hissettiklerini ifade etmişlerdir.…”
