Expeditious Situational Awareness-Based Transmission Line Fault Classification and Prediction Using Synchronized Phasor Measurements

Abstract: The wide area situational awareness attempts at the expeditious detection of imminent system abnormalities and alerting system operators to take appropriate measures. Because the critical situation may arise in a system due to faults on transmission lines spanning over a long distance, phasor measurement units (PMUs) have become an indispensable measuring device to provide a dynamic view of such a wide area system. In this paper, the perception about a 200 km long transmission line has been achieved with the h… Show more

“…These works are limited to the fault detection, classification and localization of faults and none of them have consigned the protection scheme after the occurrence of fault. A phaselet-based fault detection and prediction using Gaussian Naïve Bayes was presented in [12], but it has not addressed faults, when ground is involved and also the protection scheme is not addressed.…”

“…Hence, the number of samples per cycle Z is 200. Considering four number of phaselets per cycle, each phaselet contains 50 samples, i.e., PL = 50 [12]. For m = 0, the DC component is represented using Eq.…”

“…National Instrument (NI) based PMU facilitates the efficient online simulation on the real time voltage and current data with higher and faster sampling rate combining with high speed digital signal processing on the FPGA processor, which will enable the online event analysis. Reference [17] proposed a phaselet technique to detect the fault rapidly resulting into expeditious situational awareness of transmission line. In this paper, a transmission line fault detection, classification and localization methodologies has been achieved with the help of NI based PMU (cRIO based PMU) with detection of fault within few milliseconds, classifying the fault type, predict the localization of fault and protect the transmission line with greater speed.…”

“…In [31] attempt is made for the detection of a specific type of faults on the transmission line, using phaselets computed from PMUs. However, it did not predict the location of the fault accurately on the transmission line and thus there is no scope for situational awareness.…”
