Expansion of the Strigolactone Profluorescent Probes Repertory: The Right Probe for the Right Application

Abstract: Strigolactones (SLs) are intriguing phytohormones that not only regulate plant development and architecture but also interact with other organisms in the rhizosphere as root parasitic plants (Striga, Orobanche, and Phelipanche) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Starting with a pioneering work in 2003 for the isolation and identification of the SL receptor in parasitic weeds, fluorescence labeling of analogs has proven a major strategy to gain knowledge in SL perception and signaling. Here, we present novel che… Show more

“…More recently, bioactive profluorescent probes have been developed to study the role of receptor enzymatic activity and understand the SL perception mechanism [61a,d,71] . Their structure comprises butenolide D linked to a fluorogenic motif.…”

“…Their structure comprises butenolide D linked to a fluorogenic motif. Their various fluorescent part and D‐ring methyl substitution module their optical properties and biological activities [61d] . Unlike conventional fluorescent probes, profluorescent probes have a unique selectivity due to the release of the signal after contact with the SL receptor (Figure 4D).…”

“…The development of SL agonists also led to the synthesis of fluorogenic probes such as Yoshimulactone green (YLG) ( Tsuchiya et al 2015 ), Xilatone Red (XLR) ( Wang et al 2021 ), and Guillaume Clave series (GC) compounds ( de Saint Germain et al 2022 ) ( Fig. 3 ).…”
