Expander selection for an on board ORC energy recovery system

Abstract: This paper deals with the comparison between volumetric expanders (screw, scroll and rotary vane) and an Inlet Forward Radial (IFR) micro turbine for the exploitation of an on board Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) energy recovery system. The sensible heat recovered from a common bus engine (typically 8000cc) feeds the energy recovery system that can generate sufficient extra power to sustain the airconditioning system and part of the auxiliaries. The concept is suitable for all kind of thermally propelled vehicles… Show more

“…The issues related to the selection of the expander to the ORC system used for waste heat recovery from an 8-L bus engine were analyzed at the University of Rome "Sapienza" [81]. By means of modeling, the authors compared the inward-flow radial turbine, screw, scroll, and multi-vane expander.…”

“…Peris et al [4] were interested in using ORC for combined heat and power (CHP) applications, and Capata et al [5] recovered vehicle waste heat with small-scale ORC. In addition, solar energy, wind energy, and ocean temperature difference energy are of particular interest in small-scale ORC systems [6][7][8]. Therefore, extensive research studies have been conducted on the ORC.…”

“…Among turbo-machineries, for instance, radial turbines appears more suitable than axial ones, which suffers so much off-design conditions and needs additional strategies to manage transient state [16,17]. In this regard, volumetric machines seem to better fulfil variable operating requirements [18,19]. Among them, rotary and reciprocating types have been extensively considered.…”
