Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene (Gore-Tex) Augmentation of Deep Nasolabial Creases

Abstract: Expanded PTFE augmentation presents a safe, effective method for softening deep nasolabial creases. Patients with more severe creases are likely to show more improvement with each augmentation, but are also more likely to require multiple procedures to achieve the desired aesthetic result.

“…Approximately, 10% of patients developed a transient erythema, possibly secondary to "superficial placement" of the grafts. In 1999, Robertson and Dyer 16 reported their experience with carved Gore-Tex implants for the correction of prominent nasolabial folds. In their group, 2.5% of patients developed an infection at the implant site (Staphylococcus aureus).…”

“…Additional disadvantages of this material included a 5% infection rate and occasionally and unnatural moundlike appearance. 30 SoftForm ® is a tubular length of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene contained in a closed trocar delivery system. Its pore size ranges from 0.5 to 30 m, which allows for tissue fixations without the disadvantage of true tissue ingrowth.…”

“…The proper review of reports on GORE-TEX as a nasal implant must include a number of factors. A review of the literature [18][19][20][21]27,[29][30][31] suggests that many accompanying clinical circumstances contribute to its successful retention by the tissues. They include applied surgical methods, particular attention to the sterility and handling of the implant, and the choice of patients.…”
