Exotic Enterprise No More? Adolescent Reports of Family and Parenting Processes From Youth in Four Countries

Abstract: The current investigation cross-nationally examined the relationship between adolescent reports of family or parenting processes and a series of developmental outcomes in a sample of adolescents (N 5 8,417) from Hungary, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. “…Despite the fact that the effects by perceived closeness and communication do not follow such a clear pattern, in the cases where the variables are significant, they are always negative. That is, positive parenting processes are, in principle, sufficient to reduce the likelihood of different measures of deviance (Baumrind, 1991;Maccoby & Martin, 1983;Torrente & Vazsonyi, 2008, 2009Vazsonyi et al, 2003).…”

Fourteen items assessed three subscales, for the mother and the father, namely Closeness (6 items, e.g., "My mother/father often asks about what I am doing in school"), Communication (5 items, e.g., "How often do you talk to your mother/father about major personal decisions") and Conflict (3 items, e.g., "How often do you get angry at your mother/father").…”

“…No obstante, persisten algunas interrogantes respecto de la manera apropiada de medir el estilo parental (Darling & Toyokawa, 1997) y las características de algunas prácticas (e.g., monitoreo, Fletcher et al, 2004;Soenens & Vansteenkiste, 2005;, así como preguntas relativas a la capacidad de generalización de los resultados en diferentes poblaciones (Vazsonyi, Hibbert & Snider, 2003).…”

“…In summary, the current literature overwhelmingly recognises the impact of parents and parenting practices on adolescent behaviour, lifestyle choices and drug use (e.g., Azrin et al, 2001;Jovic-Vranes, Vranes, Marinkovic & Cucic, 2005;Liddle et al, 2001;Spooner, 1999;Vazsonyi, Hibbert & Blake Snider, 2003) Substance use and the family have traditionally been examined using a mental health perspective to understand the interactions between the user and family members (Velleman and Templeton, 2007). These models are fairly universally adopted and typically recognise abnormal interactional patterns as contributing to the maintenance of substance misuse.…”
